HOF CULTURAL CENTER

The groundbreaking for Hof was Saturday July 15, 2006 but constructions began in August 2006. When the construction of the building´s foundation began a signifant subsidence emerged and the soil also did not sink as fast everywhere and did not sink as much everywhere and as a result the decision was made to build a basement under the whole house.
Because of the enlargement in the form of a basement of 2300 m2 and various changes in the designing phase the house was 537 m2 larger than originally planned. The change can be explaned for example because of a larger restaurant area, shopping space, music school and the hallway in front of the music hall along with other various reforms made in the designing phase. The premises for the project therefore changed considerably from the competiton data, i.e. the gross size of the building went from 3500 m2 to 7413 m2.

The columnar basalt on the outside boarding of the building originates in a mine in Hreppshólar in Hrunamannahreppur. The total weight of the basalt is 300 tonns and the area is 1600 m2.
